In my 30+ years of collecting antique and vintage jewelry, one of my favorite types of jewelry to collect are vintage sugar beads. Sugar bead necklaces in great condition are very hard to find today.

Sugar glass beads are created when tiny particles of colored glass are applied to a bead and fired, slightly melting or fusing to the bead, resulting in a glittery, sandy texture. It is actually an ancient technique but was predominately made by the Japanese in the 1940-1960 era.

I've seen a lot of sugar bead necklaces and they are all usually yellow, white, pink, blue, or green. I have never seen another sugar glass necklace like this one, with pink flowers and green leaves on black beads. The hot pink sugar flowers jump out and look electric or neon!

Typically, most sugar glass necklaces had the sugar particles rolled onto the bead surface as a coating, but these beads were hand painted with sugar glass. The black beads are acrylic rounds and the larger beads have silver serrated bell caps.

Notice the matching hidden insert clasp and the silver crown setting. This is a late 1950s or early 1960s clasp style.

The necklace is 23" or 58.4 cm long. The beads are 10 mm, 12 mm, and 15 mm.

The entire necklace is in pristine clean like new condition with no signs of wear or imperfections . I've inspected each and every sugar bead and there is no missing glass. The clasp is signed Japan.

Comes gift wrapped and shipped in a new luxury presentation necklace box.
